Description:
Description: VOLUNTEER PHYSICAL, OCCUPATIONAL AND SPEECH THERAPISTS work in outpatient rehabilitation at Hospital Jose Maria Velasco Ibarra in the city of Tena in the Ecuadorian Amazon. The clinic PediHabilidad provides rehabilitation services to children with special needs to enhance their ability to navigate within the world in which they live. In addition to working in the clinic, volunteers visit rural Indigenous community to provide community based rehabilitation, and learn to fabricate braces, chairs and standers for persons with disabilities. Volunteers also participate in training Ecuadorian therapists and supervise internships for University therapy students. Volunteers will be exposed to Spanish as well as the Indigenous Quechuan culture and live with a local family during their stay. Pediatric rehabilitation experience as well as an intermediate level understanding of Spanish is recommended, but not a limiting factor in this placement. Volunteers should be creative, initiative and motivated to participate in ongoing program development.
