Description: In the 1990s, Ecuador suffered an economic crisis which led to an increase in poverty that has yet to be overcome. With poverty, comes poor health and malnutrition. Good quality healthcare is not available to everyone in Ecuador. People, especially in rural areas, have to go travel great distances in order to receive medical treatment. In Ecuador’s capital city, Quito, there is a big difference between public and private healthcare. This project is located in two public hospitals, one in Quito and one in Los Chillos Valley (Sangolqui at 40 minutes from Quito’s new town). In terms of health, the previous governments reduced public funding for medical services. Families, unable to afford the expense of health care on their own, are routinely forced to forego necessary medical treatment. In addition, families in transition, those moving from what was once sustainable farm land to a dependency on urban employment, have undergone a change in diet. Traditional foods have been replaced by commercialized fast food and junk food, which has led to additional health problems including an increase in obesity and diabetes. Lack of access to health care and malnutrition coupled with other health care concerns such as hepatitis A, typhoid fever and malaria certainly add to the immediacy of the situation. Volunteers working in Ecuador can certainly bring a wealth of knowledge and experience to the situation and in return benefit from their direct experience working with the neediest of populations. The placement in Quito is at the pediatric hospital that provides specialized health care for children from birth to 14 years of age. This is one of the main public hospitals in Ecuador and many of the children who receive care at this location come from lower socio-economic backgrounds. If you want to truly make a difference and help others, Eco Volunteer UP provides a volunteer placement at this hospital. All forms of care are needed, from providing for basic care such as changing and feeding the children to entertaining them with reading, coloring, and game playing. This placement allows you to be creative. You are welcome to bring materials and create your program for the children. The placement in Los Chillos Valley is at a hospital that provides general attention for children and adults; the focus is on providing necessary vaccinations for children and gynecological services for women. Volunteers are able to assist the medical staff as they attend to emergency cases. Depending on your Spanish skills and medical knowledge, it is possible for you to shadow a doctor in a hospital / clinic setting, intensive care unit, emergency room, at their office helping with administrative tasks, etc. The exact duties may change from day to day depending upon the hospital’s needs. Time volunteering: 2 weeks minimum and maximum 12 weeks Cost: USD 110 per week The cost includes: Pick up airport, three meals per day and accommodation in a host family
