Physician Ophthalmology Mission Trip in Papua New Guinea
Papua New Guinea Outreach with YWAM Medical Ships
Mission Statement:
YWAM (Youth with a Mission) International has over 50 years experience in more than 150 countries worldwide. YWAM is a Christian charity that offers global opportunities for volunteers from diverse backgrounds to serve, care, build and connect with individuals and communities. YWAM is decentralised in structure and financially autonomous. This allows each centre to adapt and to serve the specific needs of the community.
YWAM Townsville has operated for over 20 years with an aim to build capacity in young people and to develop the community through four focus areas: Training, Medical Ships, Youth Teams, and Operations.
YWAM values individuals’ rights to quality of life. The shared motivation is to provide people with:
Access to good health care
Food, drinking water and shelter
Opportunity for education
Expression of culture, arts and entertainment
Healthy relationships
Exposure to Christian faith and values
Fair and productive government
Opportunity to work and develop
Description:
Have you ever wanted to do something exciting with your life?
To give back? To help someone in need?
Volunteering on YWAM’s Medical Ship is an adventurous opportunity to make a real difference.
Our vessel is fully equipped with an onboard clinic where we provide free medical care to some of the world’s most remote areas.
Sign up to volunteer with us for between 3 weeks and 6 months.
Our vessel has an operating theatre right on board to help facilitate some of the more technical procedures such as dentistry and ophthalmology. To maximise our impact, we also utilise the ship to transport land-based clinics.
YWAM has operated ships in the Pacific nations since 1991. These ships have called on 160 ports in 16 nations including hundreds of island visits. During this time YWAM has provided over $37 million worth of free services to over 200.000 people through dentistry, optometry, primary health care, medical supplies, ophthalmology and housing projects.
We work collaboratively with the National Department of Health, Provincial Health Workers, and all the way to the village leaders and health workers on the ground, ensuring that we are hitting the most in-need areas and having the most effective long-term outcomes.
