Volunteer Site: Missionaries of the Poor-Kampala, Uganda
Description: The Missionaries of the Poor has a monastery at Mutundwe, Kampala in which 80 young men are in formation. They are serving the Good Shepherd Home with 300+ homeless, destitute, orphaned and handicapped residents at Mengo-Kisenyi, and Bethlehem Home with 150+ handicapped children at Busega. They also have a medical dispensary serving the slum neighborhood of Mengo-Kisenyi which is open to the public daily, averaging about 50 patients (another one is to open at Busega soon). Food packages are given out daily to 35 slum dwellers and/or internally displaced persons (IDP). There are various health issues, e.g., Malaria, Typhoid, HIV, Tuberculosis, Skin Diseases (primarily from outpatients within the slums of Mengo-Kisenyi, a community of over 10,000 families many of whom are IDP’s & Refugees from war-torn countries like the Sudan, DRC, Somalia, etc.).
