Description: Statement of Mission and Expectation of Volunteers This trip will be the first in a series of medical missions to the Nyakach district of Nyanza province located in western Kenya, Africa, near Lake Victoria. It is EM3’s vision to build on the relationships forged during the first mission to create a permanent medical missions network. During the inaugural mission each volunteer must have a willingness to serve, a complete dependency on God’s grace and faith in His sovereignty over this service. It is critical that applicants be prepared for the uncertainties inherent to pioneering. Candidates Must… ~ Have a deep love for the hurting. ~ Be physically, mentally and spiritually fit. ~ Consider personal medical history. Each volunteer will be required to purchase emergency evacuation insurance as a requirement to participate on the trip but it is important to understand that medical care in Africa is not of the quality nor is it as readily available as in the USA. ~ Obtain a personal medical consultation to identify recommended vaccinations. Obtaining vaccinations is the individual responsibility of each volunteer. Vaccinations should be scheduled no later than 4 - 6 weeks prior to travel. It is important to understand that vaccinations are not 100% effective in preventing disease. All questions regarding vaccination requirements should be directed to your personal medical advisor (i.e. primary care physician or travel health professional). ~ Obtain a personal medical consultation to identify recommended travel medications for use during travel (i.e. anti-malarials, anti-virals and anti-diarrheals, etc.). Obtaining medicines for personal use during the trip is the individual responsibility of each volunteer. It is important to understand that anti-malarials are not 100% effective in preventing disease. All questions regarding travel medication requirements should be directed to your personal medical advisor (i.e. primary care physician or travel health professional). ~ Be patient and flexible. Along with the many joys and blessings each volunteer will receive by working with people of Kenya, each will undoubtedly encounter many challenges as they work in an unfamiliar culture and environment. Each volunteer will need to have great patience and flexibility in routine and responsibilities. The purpose of this mission is to serve the Lord by serving His people. Arriving with the proper attitude and open expectations are important in order to be the blessing and receive the blessings that God has planned. ~Seek the Lord’s will regarding participation in the mission. ~Provide information necessary for EM3 to purchase emergency travel insurance for you, as part of a team policy. Each volunteer will be responsible for the cost of their portion of the travel insurance. ~First Aid and CPR training is highly recommended, but not required. ~Participate in an interview with a representative from EM3. This can be done by phone for those who live some distance from our committee. Volunteers will be notified by an EM3 representative to set up a time. ~Provide appropriate payments according to EM3’s published timeline. All payments will be non-refundable. ~Solicit donations of medicines (OTC &/or pharmaceuticals) and medical supplies from their personal network (i.e. hospital, clinic, office, church, family, friends, etc.). EM3 will provide the list of items needed. ~Participate in a pre-mission briefing which will take place the day prior to departure from the Newark Airport. During this briefing all volunteers will be oriented to the logistics and operations of the mission. All personal documents and mission supplies & medicines will be inventoried to ensure timely departure from the USA and entry into Kenya. ~Provide a significant portion of allowable luggage space for mission supplies.
